Dennis Phillips (DP) has been involved with motorcycle safety for years and has been influential in the success of many of our sites.

Dennis was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January and will be starting a 6-7 week treatment program at the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia in Atlanta on May 5th.

To show our support to Dennis, we came up with the idea of a group of riderCoaches from NRCC setting a goal of walking 360 miles (the distance from NRCC to where Dennis will be during his treatments.) We then thought we would extend an invitation to sites and coaches from all over the state to join us in a little friendly competition.

The progress of the team in the lead will be mapped on the map on the main page.

Rules:

• Teams of up to five (5) members will combine their miles and compete together. The members do not have to be riderCoaches.
• You can complete mileage in one of 3 ways. Walking/running, riding a bicycle, or swimming.
• To keep the competition fair, you will be limited to entering 5 miles a day on a bicycle.
• Mileage can only be recorded starting the day Dennis starts his 6-7 weeks of treatments which will be May 5th, and the challenge will end on June 20th, which is his estimated treatment completion date.
• This website will be used to keep track of mileage and each member will enter their own miles. The particpants will enter their own mileage.

How to participate:

• Each person who participates will contribute $20 to the 'pot.' * Please note that this money is not tax deductible since we are donating to an individual rather than a non-profit or charity.
• Get your team together and contact Angie Covey (acovey@nr.edu) or Shane Carpenter (shanec@vt.edu) with the team name, and the names of the people on the team. Shane will set all of your team members up on the website.
• WALK WALK WALK!!!

What are we competing for?

• First and foremost, we are competing to support Dennis. While prostate cancer isn't necessarily linked to lifestyle, we can all use this opportunity to get ourselves in better physical shape and improve our health.
• The team that makes it to 360 miles first will have the honor of donating 1/2 of the 'pot' to Dennis to help cover expenses incurred during his treatments.
• The team that covers the most total miles during his entire treatment period will have the honor of donating the remaining 1/2 of the 'pot' to Dennis.
• We may come up with a trophy or plaque for the winning team.

Side Bets/Wagers:
Since Gambling is illegal in the commonwealth of Virginia and a good number of us are state employees we would NEVER participate in any organized gambling activities! However, the side bets are already on. If a team comes up with a side bet with another team, either post it in the 'Notes to DP' section or email Shane (shanec@vt.edu) and I'll make sure the bet is documented on the site to make it 'official.'

Just want to make a contribution:
If you want to show Dennis your support, but are unable to participate or put a team together, you make a contribution to Dennis and you will be listed as a contributor.

Optional T-shirts:
We also have T-shirts that you can order whether you participate or not. The cost of the shirts will be $20 and any extra money made from the shirts will be given to Dennis on behalf of all of the participants.

The shirts are short sleeve black with 'W4DP' on the front (pocket area) and the quote
